This UNISA Bachelor of Commerce Degree  covers the same areas that any BCOM covers.  A student will be exposed to such subjects as accounting, general business principles, human resources, marketing, finance, economics, business management, as well as programs requiring (business) statistics, information systems, and (introductory) calculus.

No matter what a student’s formal academic major might be, it is expected of UNISA Bachelors of Commerce Degree (Generic) students to take the biggest part of their courses in business-related subjects.

Important information to keep in mind 

  • Students must select 2 majors
  • It is compulsory for one of the 2 majors to be one of the following:
    • Economics
    • Business Management
    • Financial Accounting
  • 11 credits must be completed in Year I (7 of these 11 credits are compulsory as well as 2 groups of modules representing the 2 majors),
  • 9 credits must be completed in Year 2
  • 10 credits must be completed in Year 3

 

In your 2 you will select 5 modules in your first major, and 4 modules in your second major.   You read below to see what the compulsory subjects are.  Remember that the subjects you choose in year 2 will impact what you can study in year 3.  

This means you must carefully plan out what you want to study in your final year, and work backward from there to see what the prerequisite subjects are.

Structure of the BCom Generic degree

Remember that UNISA qualifications are structured in a specific way, so that for each qualification a student need to pass a set amount of modules and NQF Level Credits in a set amount of time to be able to graduate.

You also need to complete a certain number of credits every year in order to continue studying the following year:

 

  • In year one you need to completed at least 3 modules, of 12 credits each
  • In year two you need to complete at least 4 modules, of 12 credits each

 

Also to remember is that there is a maximum number of subjects which you can register for each term.  For semester modules you can study a maximum of 5 modules per semester.  For year modules you can study 10 in one year.
